Sound proofing

When you want to prevent sound from entering your room or leaving it, you need to use sound-proofing. Soundproofing materials block external noise from entering your home/office/studio such as that of traffic from a nearby road, or people outside talking or any external work being done whose noise can disturb you. They also prevent noise from insides like loud music or an instrument being played or any other sound from getting out.

Types of Soundproofing Materials

Below are some of the commonly used soundproofing materials:

Acoustic foam Acoustic Foam – Commonly called Studio Foam, Acoustic Foam has a wedge or pyramid shape that is highly effective at absorbing sound. They can attach to walls as panels, hang from ceilings, or be put in corners as bass traps.  
Acosutic batts Sound Insulation (Acoustic batts)– Sound insulation is batts made of mineral wool, rock wool, and fibreglass, designed to fit in between the studs of walls. The batts fit comfortably between studs to take up airspace that can transmit sound.  
Acoustic panels Acoustic Panels/Boards –Sound insulation and sound-absorbing foam are used in decorated ways to form acoustic panels/boards. They can be used in the home as well as in-office since they come in many attractive colours, patterns, and fabrics.  
Acoustic fabrics Acoustic Fabrics (sackcloth)–Acoustical fabrics are thicker and heavier than other fabrics and used in theatre curtains, blackout curtains, and studio blankets.  
Acousic coatings Acoustic Coatings (MLV) – Acoustic Coating are materials such as Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) which is a dense rubber-like material, used in car soundproofing, machinery, appliances, and as an underlayment. The mass of the material acts as a sound barrier.  
Floor underlayment Floor Underlayment – When a hardwood or tile floor has to be soundproofed, it requires the decoupling of the flooring surface and the subfloor. Cork, felt, and polymers are the commonly used materials.  
Architectural Soundproofing Architectural Soundproofing – Windows, walls, doors or any other structure of a building can be soundproofed.

Factors to consider while selecting sound absorption panels

Sometimes you would like echoes, reverberations and vibrations that are caused such as when playing music in the room to behave properly. In such cases, these sounds need to be absorbed. Sound absorbing material particularly serves the purpose of improving the acoustics of the room where it is installed and can be used to enhance the quality of sound in your home/office.

Sound-absorbing materials are light, soft, porous and fluffy.

Acoustic panels are sound absorbing panels placed on walls or ceilings to control and reduce noise and eliminate echo in a room. An acoustic panel will absorb and trap the sound waves, converting the energy to heat which quickly dissipates to create a good sound.

Some important factors to consider when choosing an absorption material are:

  • A material that could absorb as much sound waves and reflect minimally while transmitting sound waves is considered a good sound-absorbing material.
  • Thickness– As the thickness of a material increases, its absorption capacity increases.
  • Density – The density of the material is defined as mass per unit volume. Density increases the absorption coefficient. So the denser the material, the better.
  • Porosity – The volume of the holes to the total volume defines its porosity. Pores or voids play a crucial part as they act as the medium of sound wave dissipation.
  • The effective absorption area of the walls determines how well a room absorbs sound.
